Dr. Sarah L. Carlson is a proud fourth-generation resident of the St. Croix Valley, graduating from Stillwater High School in 1997. She and her husband love calling the picturesque city of Stillwater home. From the moment she began her dental career in 2001, she dreamed of serving her hometown, helping friends and neighbors achieve not only beautiful smiles but also greater confidence and well-being. In 2018, that dream became a reality when she opened Carlson Dental Group.
Dr. Carlson’s approach to dentistry is rooted in honesty, compassion, and a deep commitment to personalized care. She treats every patient as she would a close friend or family member, striving to provide exceptional, comprehensive dentistry held to the highest standards. Her goal is to create healthy, radiant smiles that don’t just look amazing but also contribute to her patients’ overall wellness. Her eye for detail is her superpower when she performs her craftsmanship in cosmetic dentistry.
Earning her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Minnesota in 2005, Dr. Carlson’s passion for learning has never wavered. She has pursued countless hours of advanced and specialty training. She has been trained by world-renowned experts in dental restorations that mimic natural teeth and minimally invasive dental techniques.
Her greatest joy comes from transforming lives by restoring smiles that have been worn, damaged, or lost, helping patients rediscover their confidence. Using her finely tuned dentistry skills to perform cosmetic procedures for those who understand that good dentistry takes time is one of her favorite aspects of her practice.
Outside the practice, Dr. Carlson and her husband, Hal Peterson, embrace every adventure together. They like to cook, boat, ski, and hike as a team. Currently, they’re taking on the challenge of extensively remodeling their historic home by doing much of the work themselves. You’ll often spot them around town, enjoying Stillwater’s charm with their two beloved standard poodles or spending time with those they cherish.

When Dr. Sarah Carlson purchased a dental office in Stillwater from Dr. Ned Windmiller in 2018, she fulfilled a dream. Raised in Bayport and a graduate of Stillwater Area High School, Dr. Carlson couldn’t be more grateful to care for her neighbors, family and friends.
Dr. Windmiller operated the dental office for 40 years before Dr. Carlson took the reins. Now leading her own practice, she’s excited to continue doing what she’s done throughout her 15-year career: providing careful, complete dental care to her patients.
Two years in, Carlson Dental Group is already expanding. Dr. Michael Rohlf, an award-winning Midwestern dentist, joined the practice this summer. Dr. Rohlf and Dr. Carlson are aligned in their goal of keeping their patients’ teeth healthy and functioning well, in addition to looking great.
“We take the time to talk with the people who come to see us to learn how they would like to be helped and then share options with them that may not have been offered elsewhere,” Dr. Carlson says.
